SECURITY TIP:  ATM Scam

March 7, 2003   Huffman Security Company reports thieves are putting a thin clear, ridged plastic "sleeve" into the ATM card slot. When you insert your card, the machine can't read the strip, so it keeps asking you to re-enter your PIN number. Meanwhile, someone standing behind you watches you as you enter and re-enter your PIN number.

Eventually you give up, thinking the machine has captured your card and walk away. The thieves then remove the plastic sleeve, complete with your card. The way to avoid this is to run your finger along the card slot before you put your card in the machine. The sleeve has a couple of tiny prongs that the thieves need to get it out of the slot, and you will be able to feel them. The police would like as many people as possible to be aware of this scam, so please pass on this information. If you encounter a situation like this, please notify your local police agency.  And as Paul Harvey is fond of saying, "And now you know."

Lambert Airport Rotary Club tours "KidSmart --Tools for Learning"

February 7, 2003  Peggy Tynes Garrett, a volunteer with the Bridgeton KidSmart organization, informed Lambert Airport Rotarians about the program located at 2175 Bridgeton Square Drive which provides invaluable supplies and enriching learning materials to area teachers. The goal of KidSmart is to help enhance the education of economically underprivileged children by serving as a connection between donors with surplus items and teachers who will use these materials in ingenious ways to illuminate growing minds.  Businesses who are interested in providing surplus items such as paper goods, pens, pencils, or other materials should contact 314 291-6211. Cash contribution are also welcome to help provide educators with this "free store" to provide better education in the classroom. All donations are Tax-deductible. By partnering with KidSmart, Rotarians learned that the community can "provide students the opportunity to paint a bold tomorrow, while coloring a bright future today".

LAMBERT TAKES 2ND IN FOUNDATION GIVING

Todd presenting Linda with the bannerDecember 7, 2001  Foundation Chairman Todd Lindley presents immediate Past President Linda Ragusky of the Lambert Airport Rotary Club a banner recognizing her club for its strong support of The Annual Programs Fund of The Rotary Foundation during her year as President, 2000-2001. The Lambert Club was the second highest club in 'per capita' giving to The Annual Programs Fund last year with an average of $192.65 per member.  In Todd's kind presentation, somehow it was noted that, yes, it was his Overland Rotary Club that took the first place honors in this category.  The Lambert Club congratulates their club on its accomplishment.  To learn more about The Rotary Foundation, follow the link.

June 26, 2001  The Lambert Airport Rotary Club web site was awarded by the Technology Task Force of Rotary International today at the International Convention in San Antonio, Texas.  The task force chartered by RI President Frank Devlyn (2000-01) bestowed awards in four categories:

This site was one of two sites awarded in Zone 29, the south central USA in the later category, Club Web Site Awards.  The certificate presented to webmaster Fletcher Wells II read:

Fletcher pointed out that this was a total surprise, he was not even aware there was a competition.  He first found out about the award at about 1:00 AM one night a few weeks ago while conversing with District Governor Terry Brown over the internet.  Terry was going through his voluminous e-mail that night when he passes along the original congratulations.

The Webmaster of District 6060s website that we piggy-back on, Todd Lindley, was awarded in the DICO category.  Todd's help in hosting this site has been most appreciated.  Thanks and Congratulations Todd.

RI International Convention On-Line

June 2, 2001  For those not going to the RI Convention in San Antonio, you are going to have a great opportunity this year, with internet access to the full proceedings on an daily, hour-by-hour basis.

A "Virtual Convention" is being coordinated so non-attendees will be able to interact with Rotarians on site at the conference and obtain regular updates of presentations and pictures of the proceedings.  To register for the Virtual Conference, go to:  http://www.frankdevlyn.org/virtualconvention/

For those attending the San Antonio event, the Technology Task Force has been working hard to provide a special Technology Center at the conference.

Council on Legislation Update

May 30, 2001  The Council on Legislation, Rotary's "parliament," meets every three years to deliberate and act upon all proposed enactments and resolutions submitted by a club, a district conference, the General Council or the Conference of Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland, or the Rotary International Board. The Council itself also makes proposals.

The Council is composed of more than 500 representatives from every part of the Rotary world. Voting members include one elected representative of the clubs of each Rotary district. Non-voting members include members-at-large, the chairman and vice-chairman of the Council, and others, including the RI president and members of the RI Board and past RI presidents.

The 2001 Council on Legislation convened from 21 April in the Chicago Marriott Hotel Downtown in Chicago, Illinois, USA. Cliff Dochterman (USA) served as chairman of the Council, and Bill Huntley (England) served as vice-chairman. John Kenny (Scotland) served as parliamentarian of the Council.

The role of the Council is to review the rules that Rotary International runs on.  To get a quick recap of the 678 items the Council reviewed go to: http://www.frankdevlyn.org/council/col-votes.htm.  This is a succinct color coded page that allows one to easily review the actions taken.

Scholarships Awarded at Pattonville Program

May 24, 2001  Pat and Fletcher were a small part of the Pattonville Senior Honors Program this evening at the High School.  The event started out on a dramatic note as power to the school and some 2,000 area homes went out just as the program was getting ready to start.  Six minutes before the School Principal Jeff Marion was going to postpone the event to become at part of Commencement the following evening the power came back and the evening went off without a problem.

Pat and Fletcher awarded our scholarships to Wendy Link and Abby Webb.  Both young ladies will speak to the club at our regular meeting on June 1st.

Wendy is hoping to attend Hofstra University in New York in the fall.  She collected honors and scholarships as follows:
Cum laude; Community Service Honor Cord; PHS Community Service Scholarship, Chevron; Watson-Glover Memorial Scholarship; and the Student Council Scholarship

Abby is looking to Bradley University and walked away with the following awards and scholarships:
Magna Cum laude; Community Service Honor Cord; Chevron; Watson-Glover Memorial Scholarship; Pepsi Scholarship; Bridgeton Kiwanis Scholarship; Bradley University Scholarship; Dean Hoven Memorial Scholarship; College Preparatory Certificate; PTO Scholarship; Band/Orchestra Grant; George Washington Carver Award; National Honor Society Scholarship, Butler University Hampton Award; Southwest Missouri State University Freshman Achievement Scholarship;  Drury University Academic Honor Scholarship, and the Peggy Covac-Koelling Memorial Great Start Scholarship

The club's first set of scholarships will be well represented by these two outstanding ladies.

Orientation Meeting

May 23, 2001  The Lambert Airport Rotary Club had its first New Member Orientation meeting tonight.  President Linda, Lori, and Fletcher went through an extensive array of information with the club's two newest members.  Kathy and George took it all in and should have a much broader knowledge of the organization.

PATTONVILLE SENIORS RECEIVE

 WATSON-GLOVER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS

May 3, 2001  The Lambert Airport Rotary Club will award two $500 scholarships to Pattonville Class of 2001 graduates who have provided outstanding service to the Pattonville community. The Watson-Glover Memorial Scholarship commemorates contributions made by Glen E. Watson, Sr. and Rick Glover to St. Louis organizations and charitable programs. Both men served as President of the Lambert Airport Rotary Club.

The Lambert Airport Rotary Club WATSON - GLOVER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS focus on demonstrated commitment to community service. Both of this year’s recipients have been extremely active in service projects during their four years at PHS and have accumulated more than 200 hours of community service.

Wendy Link, daughter of Myra Link of St. Louis County, coordinated the fifth annual AIDS Awareness Day held at PHS in March. She has been active at the JCCA and as a Pattonville 5th Grade Camp counselor for three years. Her goals are to become a Registered Physical Therapist and to appear as a dancer in Broadway musicals. She plans to attend Hofstra University in New York. Wendy says that she has devoted time "to activities that help others; and in the process of working together, we all learn so much." The hard work and effort "have been worthwhile and makes me happy, more confident, and better prepared to be a successful leader." Wendy has served on the Metropolitan St. Louis Teens Care Panel as the PHS representative this year.

Abby Webb, daughter of John and Pam Webb of Maryland Heights, plans a career in Communications, Journalism, and counseling. She has been a member of the S.T.A.R.S. program all four years of high school and has served as Secretary of the PHS orchestra for three years. A member of the National Honor Society, Abby has been a cheerleader and a member of the Principal’s Academic Advisory Committee. Abby states that "service to the community has made me a more open-minded person who realizes that everyone needs to be reached. This has persuaded me to pursue a Master’s degree in high school counseling." Abby has shown great leadership as a volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House and the Hope Center for Abused Children. She plans to participate in service projects while in college and after she graduates. She states: "I plan to help others and be aware of global issues."

Scholarship Committee Meets

April 19, 2001.  The scholarship committee met today to consider the eleven applications that have been submitted for the Watson/Glover Memorial Scholarship.  The committee consisted of Pattonville Representative Karen Dapron, Pattonville/Rotarian Jayne Kasten, and Rotarian Fletcher Wells II.  The candidates were all worthy recipients.  Pattonville is blessed with some outstanding students.  Final decisions were made and will be announced on May 1.  The formal awarding of the scholarship will be done at the Honors Night Presentation on May 23.  The recipient is asked to speak at a Rotary meeting in the near future.

This Site Goes Active

April 16, 2001.  After sitting inactive for about ten months, the web site for the Lambert Airport Rotary Club has come alive.

Last summer, with the much appreciated help of former member Bob Case, Lambert’s web site was established. Bob’s technical expertise was invaluable in the original set up for this site. No one else had a clue how to get the site up and running. But, as fate would have it, things changed. The District’s site that we piggy back on changed it’s base software and Bob’s work schedule shifted some. Things hit a stall.

Currently, member Fletcher Wells II has taken a little time to see how the District’s preferred software, Microsoft Front Page 2000, works and the site is alive again. The site will be a work in progress for a while now. Fletcher says that he professes to have no expertise in this area, but is willing to work with it. He is very open to suggestions.

If you have any suggestions or note any dead links, please drop him an e-mail. The link to his e-mail address is at the bottom of the site’s pages.
